The State of AP 2026 Pt. 8: AP AI in Action: Where Intelligence Is Being Applied

Accounts payable is entering a new era. After years of focusing on digitization and process automation, organizations are now applying artificial intelligence to improve decision-making, accelerate workflows, and transform AP into a more intelligent, data-driven business function.

This article series is based on the findings from State of AP 2026: AI Rising, a new research report sponsored by Medius and xSuite. Drawing on the perspectives of 194 accounts payable, P2P, and finance leaders, the research explores how organizations are adopting AI, where they are realizing the greatest value, the operational challenges they continue to face, and the capabilities that distinguish top-performing AP organizations.

Throughout this series, we’ll examine the report’s most important findings, including the current state of AP, emerging AI use cases, automation trends, AI readiness and maturity, and the strategies leading organizations are using to prepare for more autonomous finance operations. Whether your organization is beginning its AI journey or expanding existing initiatives, these articles will provide research-backed insights to help guide the next phase of AP transformation.

In Part Eight of our series, looks at how AP is moving beyond basic automation, applying AI across invoice capture, fraud detection, compliance, coding, approvals, supplier management, and payments to build a more intelligent end-to-end invoice-to-pay operation.

AP AI in Action: Where Intelligence Is Being Applied

The technology foundation is increasingly in place. The more revealing question is where organizations are choosing to point it.

The adoption pattern that emerges from this year’s data is both logical and encouraging. Invoice capture and data extraction lead current AI deployment at 58%, consistent with the maturity of intelligent document processing as a category. For most AP organizations, it represents the right starting point: measurable ROI, contained risk, and a data quality improvement that compounds through every downstream process it feeds.

Fraud detection, payment risk monitoring, and audit and compliance monitoring also rank among the most widely deployed AI applications. Their prominence reflects something important about how AP leaders are thinking about AI. It is not simply an efficiency tool. It is increasingly a controls tool, one that strengthens financial oversight and reduces risk at a scale no manual review process can match.

The planned deployment data is where the story accelerates. Invoice coding and GL account assignment, approval routing, supplier inquiry management, and payment optimization all show significant planned activity over the next 12 months. Taken together, the picture is of a market moving deliberately from AI as a point solution for document processing toward AI as a capability that supports the invoice-to-pay lifecycle more broadly.
