Basware to Acquire Trustpair: Extending Financial Control to Payment Integrity
Ardent Partners examines the Basware Trustpair acquisition and how it could extend Basware’s invoice controls into supplier verification, bank account validation, and payment fraud prevention.
Acquisition Background
Today Basware announced its agreement to acquire Trustpair, a Paris-based provider of vendor payment fraud prevention technology. The Basware Trustpair acquisition extends Basware’s reach beyond invoice processing and into supplier identity, bank account verification, and payment integrity. Financial details of the transaction were not shared in Ardent’s pre-announcement briefing with the companies’ executives.
Founded in 2017, Trustpair applies verification controls across the B2B payment process. It (1) verifies supplier identities and banking details during onboarding. (2) It monitors vendor master records for unauthorized changes. (3) It also validates payment accounts before funds are released. According to the companies, Trustpair’s database includes more than 10 million validated supplier-bank account pairs. These accounts sit across more than 190 countries, supported by relationships with major banking networks.
How Trustpair Fits with Basware
Basware positions the acquisition as an extension of its “Invoice Lifecycle Management” strategy, which is organized around four pillars it defines as: Governed Autonomy, Continuous Compliance, Financial Integrity, and Enterprise Control.
The two platforms address adjacent parts of the invoice-to-payment process:
- Basware’s focus: Capturing, validating, matching, approving, and routing invoices.
- Trustpair’s focus: Validating supplier identity, confirming bank account ownership, monitoring vendor data, and confirming payment accounts before disbursement.
A legitimate and accurate invoice can still be compromised with the payment misdirected if a fraudster compromises the supplier’s banking information. Trustpair adds controls around the identity of the supplier and the destination of the payment, areas that sit beyond traditional invoice validation. Basware expects Trustpair’s verification data to strengthen the AI-based risk models used across its platform as the companies bring their data and capabilities together.
While Trustpair and Basware do have a number of joint customers, the overlap is light. That suggests that the immediate commercial opportunity lies in cross-selling Trustpair into Basware’s installed base while introducing Basware to enterprise finance organizations already using Trustpair.
Basware states that it plans to operate Trustpair as an independent business, retaining its brand, sales organization, and existing partnerships. Those partnerships include integrations with SAP, Coupa, Kyriba, Ivalua, and other platforms, some of whom compete with Basware directly.
Ardent’s Instant Analysis of the Basware Trustpair Acquisition
Ardent Partners views the acquisition as a logical expansion of Basware’s position in AP automation. Basware has spent decades building its capabilities around invoice capture, validation, compliance, and approval and was ranked as a Market Leader in Ardent’s 2026 AP Automation and Payments Technology Advisor. Trustpair extends that control framework to supplier banking information and the final payment file.
That expansion comes as payment fraud becomes more frequent and more difficult to detect. Seventy-two percent of AP departments report at least moderate involvement in fraud prevention and that’s critical as 41% of organizations report that fraud activity increased from the prior year. Most striking in Ardent’s research is that a full 25% of all AP organizations are unsure of the level of fraud attempts it experiences. Ardent Partners’ research shows more broadly that AI-enabled fraud attempts across the full source-to-pay process are also climbing.
While there are some early leaders in fraud protection in the AP Automation and Payments space, most solution providers focus their controls on the invoice, confirming that the supplier exists, the purchase occurred, the invoice amounts are accurate, and the transaction is approved. This can leave a gap when a legitimate supplier’s banking information is changed through a compromised email account, manipulated vendor record, or fraudulent update request.
Connecting invoice controls with continuous supplier and bank account verification can close that gap. It can also reduce the dependence on manual callbacks, static databases, and periodic vendor master reviews that may detect a problem only after the underlying information has changed. Verification accuracy, false-positive rates, geographic depth, workflow integration, and the handling of bank-account changes are all areas that warrant close examination.
Success Defined
Several execution issues will determine the Basware Trustpair acquisition’s market impact and long-term value.
- Commercial Execution: Prior to 2020, Basware’s acquisition record was uneven. Earlier management teams struggled to leverage and integrate acquired companies into sustained commercial growth. The current leadership team, supported by Accel-KKR, has brought greater strategic focus, operating discipline, and urgency to the business. It must now equip Basware’s sales organization to introduce payment fraud prevention credibly to AP, treasury, finance, and risk executives across its customer base.
- Deep Product and AI Model Integration: Operating Trustpair independently should preserve its non-Basware customer base and existing partner relationships in the short term. The larger product opportunity lies in incorporating Trustpair’s verification data and risk models directly into Basware’s platform. Customers should ultimately be able to assess supplier and payment risk within their existing workflows without navigating a separate module or managing a disconnected handoff.
- Global Bank Coverage Alignment: Trustpair reports coverage across more than 190 countries, but geographic reach alone does not establish consistent verification depth. Enterprise customers should examine how Trustpair’s banking network aligns with Basware’s international invoice footprint. This is particularly important in emerging markets where bank account ownership data may be incomplete, fragmented, or difficult to verify automatically.
- Ecosystem Management: Trustpair’s independence will be tested by its continued support for platforms that compete with Basware. Payment protection providers such as Eftsure, nsKnox, and ApexAnalytix will emphasize their independence when selling into ERP and P2P ecosystems. If this is deemed a priority, Basware will need to show customers and partners that Trustpair is operating as a platform-neutral provider.
The strategic rationale for the acquisition is sound. Basware gains an established payment verification capability without spending years developing banking relationships, validation infrastructure, and proprietary reference data. Trustpair gains access to Basware’s global customer base, invoice network, and enterprise sales organization.
Execution will determine whether the transaction becomes a meaningful extension of Basware’s platform or remains a promising complimentary offering. The current management team has earned credit for strengthening Basware’s direction and performance. Integrating Trustpair will offer a visible test of how far that progress has advanced.
High-Level Recommendations
